Must Have Tools For Any Link Builder
Yesterday, I helped my friend run some errands in preparation for his hiking trip in Europe. I became rather impatient waiting for him as he searched for a backpack, hiking boots, water bottle, water filtration devices, GPS, a compass, special pants, mobile chairs, weather resistant bags, and additional miscellaneous items necessary to make such a hike. Fortunately, I had some time to think and realize the appreciation I suddenly found for hikers. Before a hiker begins his journey, he must gather his tools. A hiker must prepare his backpack, boots, clothes and special water bottles. Before arriving at a home for repairs, an electrician must carry his tool belt including clippers, pliers, extra wiring, and etc. Before beginning any link building campaign, a link builder must load up his tools and be ready!
In my last post, I discussed three link building tools I use daily. In this post, I’ll discuss with you some tools that should be part of any link builder’s hiking backpack!
First and foremost, you need a SEO toolbar. The SEO toolbar should especially provide link analysis capabilities. When browsing and researching potential sites for link analysis and requests, you need a tool that can immediately display link metrics. A toolbar can allow you to make a quick evaluation of the site you’re researching. A link builder should seek a SEO toolbar that can display PageRank, the age of the domain, a cache date, # of backlinks to the page, and the ability to look up the WHOis information for a domain. The below image is an idea of what you should be able to quickly see with any SEO toolbar.
Any of the toolbars referenced in my previous post would be a great fit for a SEO toolbar to be installed.
Link Building Tools
Imagine the toolbar to be like a doctor’s stethoscope. A doctor can use this device to listen to your heartbeat and make a brief diagnosis and gauge the possibilities of what’s going on in your body. However, it doesn’t tell you everything. If something serious is going on, a doctor might have to resort to a CAT scan or an X-Ray. The same thing occurs for us link builders. The toolbar is our stethoscope and tools like Majestic SEO would be our X-Ray machine.
Majestic SEO at its very core returns the number of backlinks for any given domain. However, it is one of the most powerful tools on the market. Majestic SEO can view a site’s backlink trends over any specified time, provide a summary of the anchor texts, categorize the types of links linking to a site, display the relative value of each backlink, and other analytic abilities.
With its Historic Index possibly being the largest index of all the available link building tools, you can certainly expect to be provided with tons of data, analysis, and interpretation of the backlinks for any site.
Open Site Explorer
Open Site Explorer (OSE) is a popular backlink tool from the guys at SEOmoz.org. Another backlink tool with a large index, the guys at SEOmoz have been able to compile a meticulous link analysis tool in OSE. OSE is arguably the most popular tool within the SEOmoz tool suite (after all, it gets its own domain). OSE is similar to Majestic SEO in providing link metrics like anchor text, types of links, age of links, link profiles, and providing filtering and sorting abilities to easily browse through the most powerful backlinks of your site.
A unique feature of OSE is the “Compare Link Metrics” where you can add your competitor URLs and view where you measure within your competition.
By having a set of tools that they know and trust, hikers, coaches, doctors, electricians, and all other experts are always prepared to handle any task that their craft may demand. These link building tools are vital to the success of any link builder. So before taking on any link building campaign, be sure to have a few SEO toolbars and link analysis tools in your link building backpack!
